Kerala is a state blessed with natural water bodies in the form of pristine backwaters, seductive lagoons and serene lakes. While much has been talked about the beaches and backwaters of Kerala, one must not forget that the state also takes immense pride with its quiet, sprawling lakes. Here is a quick look at some of the favorite lakes of Kerala: Vembanadu Lake: Vembanadu is the biggest lake in the state and one which brings a lot of money to Kerala tourism. Being rich in algae and enveloped by palm trees, the lake has this green-blue color. Its serenity lends a very romantic ambience to the whole place. Just standing by the shore and gazing at the ripples will give you goose bumps. But you should be hanged, if you do not explore the inner beauty of its charms through sailing boats. The month of August also witnesses the famous festival of snake boat race being held here. Ashtamudi Lake: This is another big lake which seems to go on and on! Apart from being beautiful and serene, it is rich in ecology and houses plenty of organisms and fishes of different varieties. Ashtamudi is counted amongst the best places to visit in Kerala. It is also a haven for migratory birds. So, if you are a bird-watcher, this place is a must-visit. Sasthamkotta Lake: Sasthamkotta is that place which amalgamates natural beauty with spiritual bliss. The shore of this scintillating water body is housed by a spiritual temple which is visited by pilgrims and tourists alike. The best way to explore the best of both worlds is to hire a boatman and ask him to take you down to the temple via the lake. The Drosera plant is a special attraction. It is an insectivorous plant and grows in abundance near the shores. Punnamada Lake: Nestled in the district of Alappuzha, this lake hosts the popular Nehru trophy tournament every year. Snake boats race against each other vying for the coveted trophy. Thus, the place is immensely significant for Kerala tourism. It does not lag behind in terms of natural beauty, and enjoys panorama, breeze and greenery in plethora. Pookode Lake: This is one of the most panoramic places to visit in Kerala. The fact that hills and waterfalls surround the place makes the lake a truly hypnotic site. There is plenty of flora and fauna to be devoured, and the atmosphere is simply superbly enchanting.
