For those who enjoy doing nothing more on a getaway than soak up the local culture of their holiday destination, Greece ought to be firmly at the top of places you should go to. While Athens is perhaps where most of the country's famous landmarks are to be found, heading to Crete will also give you a great insight into its rich past. Base yourself in or near Rethymno, a city located on the northern tip of the isle, and you will be conveniently situated close to monuments and other attractions that date back hundreds of years. Indeed, the city was founded in the Minoan era and its history of being occupied by various groups since then means there are plenty of things you can see. One particularly fascinating attraction, however, is the Venetian Lotzia. Located in Rethymno's old town, this sixth century building was originally used as a place for noblemen and lords to discuss economic and political issues. Decrees were also announced from the headquarters, while it served a social function as officials would play games here. When the city fell under Turkish occupation, however, it was converted into a mosque and today it is home to the local public library. A trip to the Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno is also a great way to gain an understanding of how the region has developed over time and learn more about local traditions. Much like its name suggests, you will have the opportunity to look at a range of artefacts demonstrating the area's culture, including photos, textiles and paintings. Visiting the 16th-century Fortezza Castle will also make for a fascinating day out. Situated a short distance outside central Rethymno, coming to the hilltop fort from your rented holiday villa gives you the chance to observe the influence Venetian rule had on the city. Designed to protect the area from naval attacks and sieges, you can see an array of renovated food silos, battlements and water cisterns, in addition to the residential apartments that were used by local officials. The castle also contains a fascinating archaeological museum exhibiting items excavated from the local area. Come here and you'll see Neolithic and Roman artefacts, in addition to items from other eras. Wandering along Rethymno's port also gives you the opportunity to observe what life in the city was like during Venetian occupation, with some parts of it dating as far back as the 1600s. As well as observing the fantastic architecture and sea views that are to be had here, it is worth setting off on a guided boat tour. By doing so, you will have the opportunity to see creatures such as dolphins and seals up close. Although the Cretan city has an extremely rich history, it offers plenty for those with a passing interest in contemporary culture to enjoy. If you are a fan of modern art, head to the Municipal Gallery where you can observe works from a range of 20th-cemntury Greek painters. Among the artists whose pieces are on display is Leuteris Kanakakis, while the institution hosts both permanent collections and temporary exhibits. Come to Rethymno in the summer, meanwhile, and you may have the chance to take in the astounding Renaissance Festival. With this cultural showcase demonstrating a vast array of art forms, including modern dance and concerts, there is bound to be something that appeals to your interests.
