Stuttgart is perhaps unique in Germany thanks to its location. Nestled amongst valleys and vineyards, there is some diverse and beautiful scenery on offer in both the main part of the city and its surrounding areas. Take, for example, the Black Forest. This famous mountainous area is around an hour’s drive from the city of Stuttgart. With many well-known points of interest such as Titisee lake, Feldberg mountain and the Triberg Waterfalls, this spectacular wooded mountain range is a must see in the state of Baden-Württemberg. If however, you are more intrigued by the industrial rather than the natural, then look no further than the Mercedes and Porsche automobile museums of Stuttgart. Both are incredible architectural feats in their own right, housing exciting exhibits that will be sure to impress even the most discerning of car fanatics. Of course, Stuttgart isn’t just about forests and cars. The city itself has some fascinating landmarks which showcase many different architectural trends. From the Gothic and Romanesque exterior of the Collegiate Church (Stiftskirche) to the striking and functional design of the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), there are many different eye catching sites. For those who consider themselves to be a bit of a wine connoisseur, Stuttgart has a long standing viticulture history. This can be explored by taking a trip to the Viniculture Museum itself or perhaps by visiting one of the vineyards themselves. Most of the vines are planted along the Neckar River, however some are grown in the city itself! Many varieties of red grape are cultivated in Stuttgart, including Pinot Noir and the almost indigenous Trollinger. Stuttgart is an extremely cultural city, with theatres offering everything from ballet to modern rock concerts. And the Stuttgart State Opera has won several awards over the years for its outstanding productions making them a must see for any serious fans of the art. Families will enjoy such attractions as the Natural Museum of Nature Sciences, the Wilhelma Zoological and Botanic Gardens and the Stuttgart TV Tower, which was the world’s first to be built from concrete and stand at over 200m tall. While Stuttgart only has one airport, it is still relatively easy to get to, especially if you are flying direct from Europe. If you are travelling from further afield, it should be possible to pick up a flight from a busy hub such as London or Paris.
