The Shanghai International Film Festival or SIFF for short was first held in October 1993. From its humble beginnings it has grown to become China’s only A category film festival and is the largest such festival in East Asia. The festival was originally held biennially until 2001 after which it became an annual event, the only exception being 2003 when it was cancelled due to the outbreak of SARS. SIFF is jointly organised by the Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group and the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV. The Shanghai International Film Festival consists of several events, the highlight being the Jin Jue, or the Golden Goblet Awards. The award is given under several categories including best film, best director, best actor and best actress. Films from all over the world are taken into common consideration for the many awards while the decisions are made by a panel of international judges. In 2004 an additional competition, the Asian New Talent Award Film Competition, was started to identify and encourage new talent. Around RMB 300,000 is given away as prizes. In addition to the competitions, SIFF also hosts a forum and a film market called SIFF Mart. SIFF Mart consists of China Film Pitch and Catch, Film Market and Co-Production Film Pitch and Catch. It is China’s biggest platform for film trade. The 15th annual Shanghai International Film Festival will be held between the 16th and 24th of June, 2012.
