Wat Hua Lamphong, which is located in Bangkok’s Bang Rak District, is a Royal Buddhist Temple. The temple is relatively new and has a slightly modern design. It may receive fewer visitors than the older temples but the Wat Hua Lamphong is definitely worth a visit, especially if one is interested in witnessing traditional ceremonies and rituals. Many of the modern touches were added in 1996 when the temple was renovated to celebrate the King Bhumibol Adulyade’s (who took the name Rama IX) ascension to the throne. The royal seal of Kanchanapisek (or Golden Jubilee Year) plays an integral role in the temple’s redesign. The seal features two elephants standing beside a multi-tiered umbrella. Another distinctive feature of the Wat Hua Lamphong is the ubosot which is on an elevated platform. The ubosot is the prayer room and is the most sacred room inside the complex. The platform also supports the temple’s stupa or chedi. The compound located below the platform is filled with shrines of important Thai Buddhist figures including Ganesha, the Hindu God and King Chulalongkorn. The temple is located on Rama IV Road, in Bangkok’s business district. In addition to living quarters for the monks, there is also a crematorium inside the complex. The easiest way to get there is by the Bangkok metro- the Sam Yan Station is situated right outside the entrance of the temple complex. Bangkok is large, overcrowded and full of experiences that most tourists crave. From high-end malls to discount road side vendors; gourmet restaurants to hawker food stalls; quiet, serene temples to noisy, dizzying nightclubs, the city offers a series of contrasting experiences that will tantalise the senses and have tourists asking for more. Being a favourite tourist destination the city offers the best when it comes to accommodation.
