With the aim of fostering science literacy among the public India’s most prominent interactive science museum, the Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai opened its doors in 1977 with an exhibition titled light and sight. An eight acre adjacent science park was opened in 1979. Adding another dimension to science exploration is the Science Odyssey, a spherical dome projection facility showing large format science films. The current show takes spectators on trips to seven geographical locations with outstanding natural features such as Tibet’s Chang Tang Plateau, Greenland’s icebergs, Brazil’s Iguazu falls, a journey along the Amazon River, a trip to the world’s highest sand dunes in the Namib dessert, Botswana’s Okavango delta and to the forests of Madagascar. Taramandal, an inflatable, portable and interactive Planetarium simulates the night sky and shows various planets, stars, constellations and phases of the moon among other features. The most unusual part of it is that visitors sit or lie on rugs, a comfortable way to view the domed screen above. Visitors can also interact with the presenter. There is also a weekend sky observation program for budding astronomers. A biology exhibit that will certainly catch the attention of almost every one is a life size female figure in glass showing all the internal organs, the skeletal and the nervous systems. An animated demonstration explains the function of each body system and part. The centre’s facilities include an onsite state-of-the-art computer lab that offers short and long term training programs to all segments of the public, a convention centre and an extensive library of science books, journals and science films.
