Located in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is a country that is home to a rich and distinct culture as well as a multi-ethnic community. Home to modern, historical and natural attractions, the country is also becoming a popular destination for holding sporting events. This is none more so apparent than in the fact that every year the country hosts a Formula One racing event. Known as the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix, the inaugural Formula One race was held here in 1999 at the racing track known as the Sepang International Circuit. Located in Sepang, this modern circuit took 14 months to be completed and was declared open by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the then Prime Minister. Situated around 85 kms from the capital Kuala Lumpur, the track has a total length of about 310 kms and has been designed with 15 turns along with 8 straight stretches giving drivers a chance to push their cars past speeds of 300km/h. With a capacity for approximately 130,000 people, the Sepang International Circuit with its main grandstands, corporate suites and well equipped pit building is the ideal venue to host such a popular event. Due to the tropical weather of Malaysia which includes both searing heat and torrential showers, the track offers a unique challenge to drivers looking to tackle this circuit. The first ever Malaysian F1 Grand Prix in 1999 was won amidst much drama by Britain’s Eddie Irvine who at the time was driving for Ferrari. While he and teammate Michael Schumacher were disqualified due to what was cited as technical irregularities, this decision was later over-turned. Continuing Ferrari’s dominance at this track, Michael Schumacher won here both in 2000 and 2001 and then again in 2004. In recent times Germany’s Sebastian Vettel driving for Red Bull-Renault has been dominating Formula One including the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix, taking the chequered flag at the Sepang International Circuit in both 2010 and 2011.
