The Negombo Lagoon is an expansive lagoon in Sri Lanka’s Gampaha District which is located in the southwest of the island. The picturesque lagoon is sustained by a canal and several small rivers; a narrow channel in proximity to the town of Negombo connects the body of water to the sea. The lagoon is encircled by areas of dense population where coconut plantations, rice paddies and grassland may be seen. Agriculture and fishing are widely practiced in these adjoining areas. Interestingly the water depth in much of the area of the lagoon is less than 2 metres. The Negombo Lagoon covers an extent of 3,164 hectares and is considered to be a segment of the extensive Muthurajawela Marsh coastal wetland. The Muthurajawela Marsh is a noteworthy wetland habitat which is recognized as a luxuriant ecosystem. Having the distinction of being Sri Lanka’s largest marsh, this area is very popular with nature enthusiasts as it presents an extensive inter-related natural environment. It is possible to arrange excursions to the location, and you will be able to see different bird varieties such as herons, cormorants, gulls, egrets and terns amongst others. The shores of the Negombo Lagoon are occupied by the local fishermen who carry out their daily activities as they have done for generations. The fishermen embark on their daily journey on outrigger canoes, of which there are two main types; the paruva, a large catamaran and the oruva, a kind of sailing canoe. Visitors can gain a first-hand understanding of their lifestyle at the daily fish auctions. The town of Negombo was once a trading station of note for Dutch and Portuguese traders. Numerous locations of interest are to be found in this historically and culturally significant town. The visitor will be able to see the Dutch canal which was once an actual supply route, the scenic Dutch Fort and various temples and churches. Many of the latter attractions feature colourful festivals in honour of their patron saints. Tourists travelling along the road leading to the town of Kochchikade will be able to see curio and handicraft shops, gem dealers, internet cafes and restaurants.
