There are many benefits associated with allowing kids to have opportunities of learning outside the classroom and some of the best places to bring past events to life for those studying history are battlefields. Pupils who are learning about World War I might find it beneficial to come face-to-face with locations that were important during this period, as this will enable them to get a taste of what it was like at this time. One place you may want to take them to is Ypres Salient in Belgium, as you'll be able to visit a number of key sites on one trip. These include Diksmuide - Trench of Death. Just 50 metres away from the German base, this was a perilous position for many soldiers and your students will be able to get a sense of the danger the servicemen faced being situated here. Yne Cot Cemetery could also be an interesting place to see, as this is where the largest number of British graves are located in Belgium, housing 11,900 bodies. There is also a wall where the names of 35,000 servicemen are written who were never found. The magnitude of the cemetery is likely to emphasise the scale of the tragic events and could encourage pupils to learn more about the causes of the Great War, what happened during the period and the effects it left behind. If you want to visit France, the site of the Battle of Sommes is an ideal place to head to. This famous combat, which was meant to see the Allied Forces take control of the Germans instead resulted in more than 20,000 soldiers dying on the first day of the fight. As well as being able to walk around the battlefield and soak up the sombre atmosphere here, your students can visit the trenches at Aveluy and imagine servicemen living and fighting underground. The History of the Great War Museum will also help them learn important facts about the events that took place here. However, if students are learning about World War II a trip to Normandy could be on the cards. This is the location of the famous D-Day landings and youngsters will be able to stand on the beaches where many men lost their lives in their attempt to fight German forces. There are also a number of museums in the area where you can take your students and make the most of their heightened interest in the subject. If you're looking for places to take history students to encourage their interest in the subject, battlefield tours could be a good option.
