Coming to the overall layout of the city, it's quite unique with close to half of the total area being given to green spaces. Hallstatt: Pastel-coloured houses that cast reflections in the lake, with tall mountains on all sides is what best describes the kind of scenic high one would experience at Hallstatt. For many, the beauty alone is reason enough to be here, but for others, the village-feel is also quite the attracting factor. Boats traversing the distance across the lake from the village, located on a sleek stretch of land between the shore and the mountains, to the train station. In fact, the land stretch is so small that the annual Corpus Christi procession takes place in boats! An interesting bit about its topography is that salt being present in vast quantities in the hills made the village the hub of salt mining, and the time duration between 800 to 400 BC, the early iron age in Europe, is referred to as the Hallstatt Period because of the Iron Age settlers and Celts who worked in the salt mines.
