Have a thrilling time at Gold Reef City on Johannesburg breaks

Travel & Tourism
Johannesburg is a fantastic destination to visit if you're looking to book cheap flights for an exciting family holiday - and one of its top attractions for kids and grown-ups alike is Gold Reef City.

Situated around 8 km from the centre of the city, Gold Reef City comprises a 24-hour casino and theme park.

The casino offers 1,600 slot machines along with table games such as poker, blackjack and baccarat, so you're sure to find something to suit your taste if you want to experience the thrill of gaming for money.

For a more luxurious affair, you might want to consider paying extra for access to the Salon Prive section, where you can play casino games in private amid lavish surroundings.

Entertainment-wise, the casino's Globe Theatre is a great place to visit if you want a night of cocktails and light food combined with entertaining comedy and music shows.

Alternatively, the Lyric Theatre is a must-visit for culture vultures looking to take in a ballet performance or a musical.

For kids, the theme park at Gold Reef City has plenty to offer. Some of the scariest rides at the attraction include the Golden Loop, the Tower of Terror, the Raging Rapids, the Anaconda and the Jozi Express rollercoaster.

Less frightening ones range from the Wave Swing and the Mermaid to the Tornado, while your youngest children will likely love rides such as the Carousel, Jungle Train, Cups and Saucers and Dragon Land.

Elsewhere, the Animal Farmyard offers the chance to see emus, alpacas, monkeys, tortoises, cows, goats and many other creatures, while the Town Square provides live music and the 4D cinema creates an extra-engaging experience for film fans.

The Amphitheatre also puts on regular tribal dancing performances that are a must-see for the whole family.

One other attraction that might interest those taking cheap flights to Johannesburg is Gold Reef City's Jozi's Story of Gold tour.

This allows visitors to find out more about Johannesburg's gold mining history through demonstrations, films and even the chance to go gold panning yourself.

Once your day at Gold Reef City is over, why not look into the other family-friendly attractions that Johannesburg has to offer for the rest of your holiday?

The destination is home to numerous animal-themed sights that are sure to be a hit with the kids, including the Montecasino Bird Gardens, Lion Park, Korsman Bird Sanctuary, the Friendly Pets Farmyard and Croc City Crocodile Farm.

However, Johannesburg Zoo is perhaps the biggest of them all, allowing children to see a wide range of animals. Elephants, snakes, tigers, lions and apes are just a few of the creatures that can be spotted at the attraction.

It also holds various fun events throughout the year, so it might be an idea to look for cheap flights that are timed to let you take in one or more of these during your stay in Johannesburg.

Grown-ups will be able to enjoy a host of historical and cultural sights in and around the city if you want to take a break from child-themed attractions.

Major sights include the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and the Johannesburg Theatre.

You might also want to head to the Hector Pieterson Museum to find out more about the 1976 Soweto uprising. The establishment was named after one of the first casualties of the event - and you can also visit the neighbourhood of Soweto itself. The area is now one of the liveliest and most interesting parts of Johannesburg when it comes to culture and fashion, making it a must-see.

Art lovers will want to visit the Goodman Gallery, the Johannesburg Art Gallery and other venues around the city, while the Market Theatre regularly holds exciting shows to suit all tastes.

You could also follow a heritage trail around Johannesburg, such as one tour that looks at the sites linked with Mahatma Gandhi, who spent around 21 years of his life in the South African metropolis.

Another trail takes visitors around old Johannesburg and its impressive mansions, while one other route passes by the various structures designed by Herbert Baker, one of the country's most influential architects.

Whatever you choose to do on your family holiday to Johannesburg, you are sure to have an unforgettable time!

If you want to take the kids to Gold Reef City Johannesburg, choose from one of our many cheap flights to the city at Netflights. By booking cheap flights to Johannesburg, you can save some cash to splurge on the things that make for an unforgettable family getaway.
