If you're considering booking into Greek Island villas, why not consider the largest of the isles, Crete? A beautiful location, Crete is steeped in history and is sure to offer something for everyone, be it ancient ruins or sandy beaches. The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete measures 160 miles in length and has plenty to offer even the most discerning holidaymaker. Before you travel, book into Greek luxury villas and choose accommodation with a pool to make sure you've always got somewhere to cool off from the Greek sun. Once you've settled in, venture outside to explore what the island has to offer. If you're a fan of beautiful scenery, you'll find it in plentiful supply here, with the White Mountains to the west, the Psiloritis massifs in the centre and the Sitia Mountains on the east of the island. There are vast plains and a picturesque coastline too, along with numerous quaint fishing villages to visit. Make some time to spend a day visiting the fascinating old towns of Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion or the villages that lie at the foot of the mountains. Here you can pick up traditional items such as baskets, glassware and silk to take home as souvenirs. As well as the natural sights, there are numerous ancient ones you shouldn't miss, such as the Minoan palace at Knossos, which dates back to the Neolithic era. There is also the classical site of Gortys and a number of ruins on the island of Koufonisi that date back to the Minoan and Roman periods. If you'd like to see some of the artefacts excavated though the ages, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where you can see Minoan relics firsthand. Meanwhile, if you want to find a great spot for a bit of sunbathing, journey to Elafonisi Beach in the south-west, where you'll find a tropical lagoon and a number of little islands within wading distance. Alternatively, call in at the beach at Frangokastello and don't forget to visit the huge fortress here, too.
