The world's best honeymoon destinations

Travel & Tourism
A honeymoon is a holiday with a whole lot of expectations attached to it. When choosing a honeymoon destination, the best approach is a laid-back one. So much thought, preparation and stress can go into the wedding itself, ultimately the honeymoon should be the time to wind down, relax and enjoy ultimate luxury. The only secret is to choose a spot that fits you as a couple – one that tailors to your personalities and reflects what you most enjoy when on holiday. Once you’ve figured that out, the world’s your oyster. Snow fans could choose a skiing honeymoon at a chic mountain lodge. Sun worshippers may opt for a honeymoon package at a luxurious beach resort. Culture vultures might be best suited to an urban honeymoon in a fascinating capital, and the adventurers amongst you may be intrigued at the thought of trekking together through rainforests or mountains. So where are the world’s best honeymoon destinations? To give you a taster of what’s on offer, we’ve gathered together a few tried and tested options… France We may as well start close to home. Timelessly popular for romantic breaks for good reason, Paris is a wonderful place to spend a honeymoon. Sit on the steps of Sacre Coeur and admire the view. Spend hours exploring the back street cafes of the Marais. Feed each other delicate macaroons in La Durée or sip champagne on a sunset cruise down the Seine (this is compulsory – we don’t care how corny it is.) Stroll hand-in-hand through the city’s beautiful gardens and parks. Summer or winter, rain or shine, we’re sure you’ll love la ville d’amour. But if capital cities aren’t your style, there are plenty of other tempting French destinations to please your inner Francophile. You could honeymoon at a ski resort in Courchevel, Megève or the oh-so-fashionable Méribel. Wine-lovers could explore the Loire and get closer acquainted with the local grapes. For a honeymoon with old-school charm, the Cote d’Azur shouldn’t be skipped. For the glitz and glamour of Nice without the slightly tacky tourist element, try Antibes. From here, Cannes and Monaco are short train trips away. You could hire a car for a few days and explore the medieval villages of Provence. Feast in cobbled courtyards during the summer and in the winter, shut your doors against le mistral and have cosy evenings in (with a good bottle of local wine of course)… Aruba For those passionate about sun, sea and sand, the Caribbean is a wise option for a honeymoon. The people are friendly, the weather is reliably gorgeous, and you have your pick of endless stretches of undisturbed white sandy beaches. The sunsets in Aruba will surpass your wildest expectations, so bring a camera. To add a touch of ultimate luxury to your honeymoon, you could book accommodation with a built in spa package. Aruba is full of hotels with luxurious spa options and many of them cater specifically to honeymooners. Build up a serious tan, snorkel to your hearts content, sneak away for a quick shopping trip (if needs must) and explore the local food options. You’ll find sunset cruises options in Aruba too –it may be cheesy but this is a once in a lifetime holiday after all – so consider them. You can do as much or as little as you want in Aruba. If you’re an active type, there’s a rich selection of water sports at your disposal. That being said, no one will judge you if you simply want to lie on the beach all day, punctuating the laziness with quick dips in the ocean to cool down. You can get your exercise during the hop, skip and jump towards the pool bar for fresh cocktails. What more could you want? United States Such a huge country, so many options. Where do you begin? If you’ve never been to NYC, take a honeymoon surrounded by the city lights of the Big Apple. Or for a city location with the laid-back Californian vibe, consider San Francisco instead. Once you’ve spent a few days here, you may want to consider driving south down the glorious coastal route that is highway one towards San Diego. Stop at Santa Barbara and Los Angeles along the way. Pop over the border to Mexico for a few days if the mood takes you. If that still sounds too fast paced, then the soothing shores of Hawaii could be more to your liking. Find a good spot and stick to it or island hop by plane or ferry. You’ll appreciate the contrasts between the bustling Oahu and the far more tranquil Kauai. The good old USA has enough honeymoon options for everyone. If you don’t know where to go, you could always do a tour – start off in New York, wind your way down to Florida for some time at the beach, pass through the atmospheric South, and end up in sunny California. We shouldn’t fail to mention the classic American honeymoon option of Niagara Falls. And if you decide to get married while on the road, there’s always Las Vegas… Fiji Turquoise lagoons towered over by dramatic mountains. Beaches so perfect they look like they’ve been digitally enhanced. We think Fiji has to be one of the most relaxing spots to take a honeymoon in the whole world. The best news is, unlike other popular honeymoon spots, you won’t have to jostle for space on the beach. 330 islands make up the Fijian archipelago and of these only around 100 are inhabited. You’ll have peace and quiet while you enjoy deserted beaches, stumbled across jungle waterfalls, and swim amongst pristine coral reefs. Fiji is well-accustomed to honeymooners by now, so you’ll have no problems finding accommodation with special offers for newlyweds. In terms of accommodation, you’ll see everything ranging from tree houses and bungalows to swanky hotels. You could do a one-centred holiday, or you could cruise between various islands. Will your favourite spot be the coral coast? Or perhaps you’ll be seduced by the beauty of the Mamanuca islands. Fiji is a paradise for water-sports fans, whether it’s diving, windsurfing, snorkelling or saving that you specialize in. Like Aruba, you’ll be able to take advantage of spa packages when in the mood for some pampering – or just grab a beachside massage one afternoon! The Amalfi Coast As soon as you head around the first set of bends leaving Naples, you’ll fall in love. With your destination that is. The winding route towards Sorrento sees you make your way (at a dizzying height) along the cliffs, where below you’ll glimpse the enchanting fishing villages of Ravello, Amalfi, Salerno, Sorrento and finally, the magnificent Positano. Each have charming centres, beautiful churches, interesting local history and a wealth of charming streets to explore together. The Amalfi Coast would soften even the hardest hearts, so for honeymooners it’s truly blissful. You could opt to stay in one place and hire a Vespa to transport you between the neighbouring towns. Or you could spend a night or two in each location, staying in a mixture of big hotels and charming family-run villas. It’s definitely worth taking at least a day trip to the island of Capri. Bathe in the Mediterranean ocean every day after discovering the local sights and end each night sharing a limoncello looking out to the stars. It goes without saying that when you’re in food will be an inevitable part of your enjoyment in this honeymoon option. Home-made gelato, fresher than fresh seafood, pizza just pulled from wood-fired ovens… gourmets will be spoilt for choice. Bora Bora Yes, you’ve caught us. We’re beach-lovers at heart, so our final honeymoon suggestion to you is a small piece of paradise in French Polynesia – Bora Bora. Home to the remnants of an extinct volcano, this island will enchant you with its scenery, tranquillity and beautiful beaches hemmed by the warm Pacific Ocean. One hour after arrival, you’ll feel any stress from the wedding preparation start to melt away under the warm sunshine. Free from throngs of tourists, traffic pollution or a rowdy party scene, Bora Bora is utterly ideal for couples who want romantic isolation. Turn off your phones, slip on your flip flops and adjust yourselves to ‘island time.’ Here you have no choice but to take it easy, spending your days lying on the beach, swimming in the lagoons and snorkelling your way along the coral reefs. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, go on a shark-feeding scuba dive. There won’t be a problem finding special honeymoon packages in the island’s resorts. And Bora Bora started the over-the-water bungalows trend, which today range from cheap to extremely expensive. One last thing - ditch the rental car and get around by bike. These are merely a few ideas to get the ball rolling. At the end of the day, the honeymoon itself is the main event. The destination is just a garnish – an extra addition that will hopefully amplify what is already an unforgettable experience. So when selecting your honeymoon destination, just use your instinct, do your research, and most of all, enjoy!
