Different walls that were constructed by separate kingdoms to keep intruders at bay were joined together, an effort that took ten years of labour, and hundreds of thousands of workers. Approximately 180 million cubic metres of rammed earth was used to form the core of this wall. Ironically, the wall never did live up to its actual purpose, but did function very well like an elevated highway for transportation across the mountainous regions. The beacon tower system, that used smoke signal generated by burning wolf dung, was also extremely effective in relaying the news of enemy movements to the capital city. The Ming dynasty tried to restore the wall, using over 60 million cubic metres of stone slabs and bricks, a project that took more than 100 years to complete, to say nothing of the costs and labour involved. Although the wall once again failed to fortify the kingdom, the effort led to the Great Wall becoming the only man made wonder that is visible from space on the face of the earth. Xi’an: Earlier known as Cháng’an, Xi’an was the city of glory for China, a place where many cultures coexisted harmoniously, and the Chinese culture thrived, reaching the heights of creativity and sophistication. It was also the beginning and end of the Silk Road, where camel caravans from the Eurasian continent unloaded their goods and purchased Chinese merchandise to be sold across the world. Although the golden era came to an end in the 10th century, settled in the fertile Wei River valley, Xi’an is one of China's major attractions.
