For the perfect destination in the sun and the chance to soak up some beautiful scenery, why not consider Greek villa holidays? A trip to the Greek Islands can be a great way to get away from it all, enjoy the stunning landscapes and relax by the sea, as well as to discover a little of the history of these parts. And you'll be spoilt for choice when choosing your destination as there are so many Greek Islands to decide between. If you're looking for a relaxing break with no hidden surprises, you might like to visit the tried and tested resort of Crete. Not only is the island home to 1,000 km of stunning coastline, warm sands and secluded coves, Crete also houses a number of important archaeological sites - great to visit if you want a break away from the beach. The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete is where you can find the former Minoan palace of Knossos - the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on the island. Situated close to the town of Iraklion (Heraklion), the historic location is a must-visit for any history buffs or interested travellers looking to find out more about the past. A palace was established at the site in around 7000 BC, when the first settlement was made here. The kingdom is thought to have been the residence of the legendary King Minos before being destroyed in 1700 BC. The palace was then rebuilt but later gutted again by fire. The remains were then dedicated to the goddess Rhea and the area was no longer inhabited. A number of excavations have taken place over the years - the first large scale dig took place in 1878 and brought to light many ancient pots once used for storage. Another excavation of the palace and the surrounding area was held between 1900 and 1931, concluding with the palace being restored. Wander around the site and explore the remains of the throne room, royal wings, theatre and workshops to really get a feel for what it must have been like to live in the palace in bygone times. In the vicinity, you'll find a number of other archaeological sites too, if Knossos has whetted your appetite for history. Call in at the ancient cities of Gortys and Phaistos and stop off at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum to view relics found at the sites, from vessels and discs to frescoes and goddess statues.
