Book cheap flights to enjoy the Sydney Festival 2011

Travel & Tourism
Sydney is always an exciting place to visit, but by booking cheap flights for January you can enjoy the 2011 Sydney Festival. This vibrant cultural feast is the most attended cultural event in the whole of Australia and hosts a huge variety of performances catering to almost every taste.

By booking Sydney cheap flights, you may find you are able to attend this incredible festival for less money than you would suspect. And since many of its events are free, you will find yourself seeing amazing performances without any charge.

Taking place across three weeks in January, this annual festival started in 1977. Initially put together to attract visitors to the city during January - the holiday month - the festival is now an internationally renowned cultural attraction attended by some one million people each year.

With over 80 separate events on offer throughout the festival's duration and more than 500 artists listed to appear, it is well worth taking Sydney flights in January to attend.

When your travel plans are confirmed and your flights are booked, you can start to plan which of the festival's events you would like to attend. Some are free while others require a fee, so check the pricing of the performances you wish to see before making your way over to the venue.

Arguably one of the most exciting events on the festival's calendar, First Festival Night takes place on January 8th. Kicking this three-week extravaganza off with a bang, First Festival Night is a free event which attracts approximately 100,000 people.

Hosting a variety of entertainment, you will be able to see new shows by stand-up comedians, dance the night away at amazing performances by live bands and even attend striking displays of modern art, such as First Contact. Taking place in Chifley Square, this is a multimedia artwork spanning some 12 storeys, set to live music.

Those travelling with children will find their youngsters are well catered for too, with a variety of events and activities designed especially for them to enjoy during this electric festival opening day.

And since you're revelling in a celebration of the city, why not attend the Australia Day festivities while you're staying in Sydney? A particular favourite is the Ferrython, which sees Sydney's ferries race each other from Circular Quay to Harbour Bridge. This is a hugely popular event with a great atmosphere, catching the jubilant spirit of the day.

Meanwhile, if you're a music fan - or enjoy Shakespeare - you may want to head to an outdoor symphony orchestra performance. Spreading your blanket on the grass and relaxing in the open air, you will be able to hear renditions of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream performed live before your very eyes.

There is also a huge number events taking place which can be attended for fee. These happen in exciting venues around the city, such as the Sydney Opera House, and range from music and dance to photography and live talks.

One such event is an intriguing twist on a cinematic classic. The 1931 Universal Studio's Dracula is a well-known film, which is given a whole new take by musician Philip Glass. Performing live during a showing of the classic movie, you will find he offers a completely different experience of these well-known scenes.

If you're a fan of music and dance, you should try to attend the incredible collaboration of the Australia Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Dance Company. Taking place in the open air at night, this magical performance is sure to captivate and astonish its audience.

While Sydney is an incredible city to visit at any time of year, this annual festival is a particular attraction. With so many amazing cultural events on offer spanning a wealth of different art forms, from classical music to energetic modern gigs, comedy performances and live talks, the festival has something to offer everyone.

And since many of these events take place in key areas around the city, you will find you can explore the sights of Sydney while enjoying the festivities.

So, book your Sydney flights today and start planning your Australian adventure.
