If you are considering Greek island holidays, you will find that Corfu has much to offer. Boasting a widely varying landscape, tradition and picturesque beaches, the island has something to attract everyone. The largest of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is also the most green. And while it is home to so much plantlife, it is also an area of great variation in terms of scenery and terrain. While in the south of the island you may find yourself enjoying fine stretches of beach, the north is home to rocky, jagged and mountainous scenes. Walking is the best way to explore the island - and it is home to countless paths that will take you past wildly different views, all of which hold their own particular beauty. To escape the crowds, Maltas is perhaps the quietest corner. Situated in the south-west of the island, it is surrounded by hills topped with dense woodland - and it is rarely found by tourists. It holds traditional ways of life and is the perfect place to explore to experience the culture of this beautiful island. Meanwhile, the south-west is also home to the longest stretch of beach on Corfu. The island's golden sands are some of the most beautiful in the world, and are perfect for those looking to relax near the sea. Towards the north, you will find contrasting terrain. Here you will be able to see the island's mountain, Pantokrator - which is also known as Lord of Creation - as well as dramatic coastline and cliff scenes. The north-east sees another change in view, with pretty white pebble coves perfect for on-foot exploration. These areas of the island are particularly beautiful and are ideal for those wishing to take scenic shots of their trip. Discovering the historical routes of the island is perhaps best done in Corfu Town, in which its heritage is reflected in the architecture and layout. Narrow, winding streets make up the outskirts of the Old Town, leading to a centre with distinctly French and Venetian feels. Here you will be able to explore some of the island's art galleries, as well as its shops and fine musicians playing in its streets.
