Hotel Competition 101: Know Your Guest, Know Success

Travel & Tourism,Recreation & Leisure

Every business is focused on customers whether it's bars, retail stores or hotels and each approaches customer service differently, depending upon what they offer. In the hospitality industry, lodges that know their clientele offer hotel supplies and amenities that will be both functional and attractive, in addition to outstanding guest services. When you're in the hotel business you know that everything matters, whether it's sparkling windows in the foyer or spotless guest rooms furnished with helpful hotel supplies. Hotels that are familiar with their guests, be they business professionals or honeymooning couples, also know their preferred hotel supplies; this gives them an edge over their fellow hotels.

Retail stores, hotels and restaurants use mystery shoppers to evaluate their businesses, including the employees, product and hotel supplies. Sending someone to spend the night at a rival hotel, with a checklist is a must. They should be reviewing every a typical guest might consider, including hotel location, the hotel supplies in the guest rooms and the advertised amenities. For example, lush gardens at entrances to hotels are indeed lovely, but if the 1st thing people notice are exteriors in desperate need of pressure washing, all the beautiful plants in the world don't matter. As well, although luxury hotel supplies are great, they won't balance out poor service or fixtures that are out of service.

"Who is our typical guest and which hotel supplies and amenities do they use?" Every hotel should be able to answer these questions. Hotels near convention centers highlight their business centers as they host business travelers; on the other hand, family resorts near amusement parks focus on roll away beds and in-suite microwaves among other hotel supplies. Hotels that cater to their guests have an competitive advantage, especially when they offer universally used and loved amenities, like free continental breakfast. When hotels know their guests and use feedback from guest comment cards and reviews, they're able to determine which hotel supplies are most popular and which wouldn't be missed were they no longer available.

Competition is stiff among hotels. Every market is different; some are very competitive while others, with a single hotel serving hundreds of square miles, are not. Across the country, hotels range from small motels to luxury high rise resorts. Along those same lines, the hotel supplies and amenities they provide vary wildly from liquid hand soap to body scrubs and bathrobes to plush bath towels. Although tastes, budgets and what qualifies as useful hotel supplies differs among people and demographics, hotels know everybody only wants the finest they can afford.

Today, businesses, including hotels, are fighting to stay open. This is especially true of areas super saturated by a variety of lodges. However, the inns that know their guests, the hotel supplies they use and the amenities that draw them in have a higher chance at success. Hotels must also exploit every opportunity to get to know their guests better, including asking them about their preferred hotel supplies. Getting ahead of the competition, and staying there, requires hotels to be vigilant about their guests' likes and dislikes, particularly when it comes to the hotel supplies as this affects occupancy rates, guest reviews and ultimately, the survival of the hotel.
