Before you head to paradise in Panama, you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure your tropical getaway is optimized. Staying indoors while in Bocas Del Toro is not an option, so here are a few suggestions on activities that will make this experience one to remember: Scuba Diving: The uniqueness of the invertebrate creatures in Bocas’s reefs are a beauty to behold in itself. Peppermint shrimps, arrow crabs, bristelworms, bristle starfishes and thousands of others make it a diverse underwater world truly worth exploring. This is not to mention the contrasting brilliance the many varieties of sponges, which scientists venture from far off lands to come study, display for all to see. Fish aren’t necessarily abundant due to the very heavy survival fishing done by the Natives of Bocas Del Toro. The more common fishes of the reefs are: gray angel, white snapper, yellowtail snappers, small groupers. There are also an abundance of eels: spade, grunt, parrot, needle, damsel, green and spotted moray. Snorkeling: The best places for snorkeling are in Admiral Bay (Bahia de Almirante), where the coral reefs are more protected, waters are usually clear and there are no waves. Many of the snorkeling sites are also scuba diving sites, because many of the reefs can go down up to 60 feet. The reefs in Bocas del Toro islands are very healthy and have a great population of corals and colorful sponges. Most of the reefs drop very gently to the bottom. Due to the clear of the waters, snorkelers can see the beauty and colors of the life on the mangrove roots: sponges, fire corals, casiopeas, starfish, crabs, crawl and swim on or between the roots. Fish find refuge in this impressive underwater forest, which is also the nursery to many other species. Surfing: More and more surfers come to Bocas Del Toro every year to take advantage of the local waves, thus making it one of the more popular activities to partake in while on the shores. There are three favorite spots that are “must-rides”, these are the beaches outside of the Colon and Bastimentos islands. The other “must-ride” is a beach off of the northern tip of the Caranero Key. There are a few surf shops in Bocas Town, where you can repair, rent, or buy boards and accessories to wear. There are also a couple Surf Schools to check out if you’re new and want to start yourself on journey to a relaxing activity. Biking: Taking a bike tour is a great way to do exercise, and explore the fascinating new world around you all at once. The only island with facilities for biking is Colon. Work your way through dense rainforest, and ride along the ocean with a breath-taking view that will leave you wanting to make this more than just a visit. Hiking: Rainforest trekking is one of the less developed tourist activities around Bocas Del Toro. This is mainly due to the fact that there are few trails that exist which make it easy to navigate through the rainforest. This adds a bit of thrill to an already beautiful and unique experience. There are few things more exciting than discovering a little known off the beaten path haven. Check around for a guide in order to let you explore things you may have looked over on your own, and to make things safer in case you wander off the beaten path. Sightseeing: Undoubtedly the reason you came to Bocas Del Toro is because the geography is much different from where you’ve come from. There are two ways, at present, to sightsee the Bocas del Toro islands: by boat which is the easiest and best way, and by car but only on Colon Island. If you’re interested in a one day tour of the islands it is recommended that you rent a boat and take in all of the magnificent views available on this water journey. Stop by local beaches to swim, surf, or even join a group at night for marine turtle observations. Your visit to Bocas del Toro can turn into a much more permanent basis. Every year the islands are being developed to create a home for those who look to relax, and escape from the discordance of modern day life. Your days should be enjoyed, developing new hobbies and refining old ones. Life can be lived to its fullest in Bocas del Toro.
