What is the greatest hurdle most people face when beginning an exercise regime? Motivation. We all know that heading to the gym every day would be better for our health, but many of us still hit the snooze button more mornings than not. One thing that can get us to throw ourselves out of bed no matter how tired we are is a cold, wet nose and pleading whines coming from the foot of the bed: the dog! That’s why Personal Training Manhattan has gone to the dogs… for motivation! Pets improve the quality of our lives every day. They cheer us up when we’re down, flop on the couch with us for a lazy Saturday or run around with us all day doing errands, all the while relishing in whatever attention we choose to give them. But pets, just like us, need to burn off the calories they consume, or the consequences can be lethal. Overweight pets are more prone to debilitating conditions such as hip dysplasia and arthritis, as well as behavioral conditions that arise from the sheer boredom of inactivity. Luckily, many activities that people in Manhattan do to improve their own health can have wonderful benefits for pets as well! Running, cycling or rollerblading with your dog is a great way to burn calories together while taking in the sights, sounds (and in your dog’s case, smells) of the city. Although many people envision a leggy Boxer or Lab as a running buddy, few people realize that little terriers can also make fantastic cardio buddies. Different dogs have different capacities to tolerate exercise, though, so it’s a good idea to start slowly. For older pets or those who don’t enjoy running alongside you, there are plenty of other activities that dogs can benefit from. “Doga” is a style of yoga that was developed for people and pets to practice together. Just like people, pets can get stiff and achy, and a little deep stretching with their best friend is sometimes a healthier and fun alternative to anti-inflammatory drugs or heated pet beds. We all know the benefits of yoga – increased circulation, fewer injuries, more flexibility and balance; but many people don’t realize that these benefits can be enjoyed by dogs, too! There are many Doga DVDs and instructional clips on the web to choose from, so even if your personal trainer has never heard of Doga, chances are they can easily learn how to incorporate it into your normal yoga routine. Next time you are about to ignore that wet nose, hit “snooze” on your alarm clock and call in sick to your Personal Training Manhattan appointment, don’t! Your dog will thank you.
