In case you can switch plans at your wish, basically every healthy person would remain with an Original Medicare plan and shift to a better plan only when they fall ill or require expensive prescription drugs. Besides, date deadlines, geographical restrictions and other factors may prevent you from switching or joining a Medicare plan. Specific network of physicians and doctors It’s possible to join a Medicare Advantage Plan or any Medicare Health plan only if you live in the locality of the plan as most of these plans work with a specific network of physicians and doctors. You may not be able to access this network if you live outside their geographical boundaries. Moreover, it is only if you have Medicare Part A and Part B will you be able to join these plans. However you will not qualify for a Medicare Advantage Plan if you suffer from permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant. Join when you are eligible for the plan You can join Medicare plans when you are eligible for it, which is anytime between the three months before and after you turn 65. In case you get Medicare because of some disability, you can join 3 months before and after your 2nd year of cash disability benefits. In case you don’t enroll now, you are not considered eligible for the plan till November 15th. Moreover, if you join a new plan anytime other than these time frames, you will have to go through some health questions and eligibility as enrollment is not guaranteed. Of course, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan and move outside its service area, you can switch plans to one that is offered in your new area. In case there is no Medicare Advantage Plan in your new locality, you can join a Medicare Supplemental policy or any Medicare plan in your new locality. If you have an Original Medicare Plan, Medicare Cost Plan or Medicare Private fee-for-service Plan, you can also join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. However as you can join and only have one Medicare plan, in case you join another plan even if you have a Medicare plan, you are automatically removed from the current plan.
