More than fifty people were injured when an elderly driver plowed through a group of hikers marching in a parade in a small mountain town in southwestern Virginia Saturday. People attending the event rushed to the aid of those who were injured and even helped lift the car to pull out those pinned underneath. Some of the victims had to be airlifted from the scene while others were whisked away while over a dozen were whisked away by ambulance. During the Damascus Hikers Parade at the Trail Days at around 2:30 p.m. witnesses said they saw a vehicle with a handicapped parking sticker traveled more than 100 feet before coming to a stop but not after running a few dozen hikers over. "He was hitting hikers," Vickie Harmon, a witness from Damascus told reporters. "I saw hikers just go everywhere." Some of the hikers were pinned underneath the vehicle as it roared through their parade. As the dramatic event unfolded those near it rushed to aid those in help. Amanda Puckett, a Damascus resident was amongst them. Puckett, who was watching the parade with her children, ran to the car and along with others lifted it to help extricate the trapped hikers. "Everybody just threw our hands up on the car and we just lifted the car up," she told reporters. Emergency respondents helped transport three of the victims in critical condition via air to regional hospitals. At least a dozen other victims were rushed to local hospital via an ambulance. Authorities have not released any detailed information regarding the driver that caused the accident and it is not known for certain what caused the driver to plow into the crowd. They say that the elderly driver had preexisting medical conditions, which may have led to the accident. His current condition is yet to be released as well. Investigators are continuing to look into the Virginia elderly driver car accident incident. A combination of the quick thinking and action of the crowd led to the rescue of those who were injured in the accident. So far, there have been zero deaths reported. If you have been injured during a parade or an outdoor event by a vehicle, it is recommended that you seek the immediate assistance of a medical expert. Ignoring minor injuries may lead to more serious permanent ones that could affect your lifestyle. About the author: Paul E. Lee is a personal injury lawyer who cares about the community.
