With people so concerned about time off, vacations, resting whenever they can, taking it easy, being careful not to overdo and most everything similar, it seems unlikely that one should never miss taking a day off when the calender says you should. The same might go for religious persons when it comes to Sunday. Remembering the Sabbath to keep it holy is a given. There are at least two problems with this theory. First, one would never take a day off from brushing your teeth--Sabbath, holiday or . personal strike against life day. Possibly 100 or so years ago you might have, but not today. Second Michael Phelps when interviewed after last years Olympics said that he not only had not had a day off for as long as he could remember, but really did not mind. Most people find the everyday without a break discipline simply impossible. They argue that it wears them out, creates personality problems (all work and no play making Jack or Jane a dull person) and the like. They cannot conceive of a benefit to never missing a workout even if its only 60-80 minutes long while possibly listening to their favorite music, reading with the help of a bike rack or watching CNN. How is the normal daily workout that much different than the early morning tooth care ritual? Granted oral hygiene may at most take five to seven minutes in comparison to the 60-80 of the standard workout. But where are more more differences than this? Clearly, it seems there would be far more similarities. For instance, both result in an increased attractiveness; both eliminate residue and debris; both make a person feel fantastic; both are simply considered to be good for a person relative to his overall healthiness. This country has a strong belief in the ultimate goodness of rest and relaxation. Any day off, vacation or holiday is seen as a major celebration of our opulence as a nation. People elsewhere could never do such a thing, presumably. As a result we look oddly on those who seem to disagree, flaunting their July Fourth fifteen mile run in our faces. You are a Health Nut if you dare to be different. The Normal Majority doesn't like such blatant deviation from what they believe to be tried true, good, and right. Yet, these Normal Folks just don't look all that great, do they? Might not their love handles and pots be the result of just too much celebrating?
