To make a slim floor scale one needs to be able to make a slim load cell. The height of the load cell is a key limiting factor for how slim a floor scale can be for a technology that uses load cells. And although other technology that does not use load cells has emerged today the most commonly used digital scales technology depends on load scales to help measure the weight. And so the challenge is to make a load cell that is very slim and can yet withstand very heavy weights because floor scales are useful the most when weighing very heavy objects. It is in fact their many selling point that they do not require you to lift very heavy objects on to a high platform to weigh them. And so where the technological cutting edge is the place where a material is developed that can withstand heavy bending loads while being very slim. Now let me explain that a little more. This is because you may feel that very thin strips of metal can also after all withstand heavy loads and do not get crushed to powder when a heavy load is placed on them. Here the challenge is not just to survive a heavy load but it is to bend in a very precise manner when a heavy load is applied. It is by measuring this bending which is called the strain that the weight of the object is measured. Now for a very slim metal component to bend precisely and then return to its original shape once the load is lifted is not easy and that is where research is being done to come up with materials that are able to do that. And from time to time a slightly better material is found which reduces the small height of a floor scale by a little amount. Over the months and years the little amounts add up to a lot and you get a decidedly better floor scale. So if your floor scale is a few years old you should check out the latest options.
