Have you ever really thought about what happens to your pet’s waste? What about all of those individual little dog waste bags that pile up in the garbage cans day after day? After a rather eye opening trip to India, Matthew Manzotta decided that all of those baggies should and could serve a purpose. Even if you use the biodegradable pet waste bags, they are still piling up at a shocking rate to later be dumped in a landfill. Think of it as wasted waste. Mazzota, a Massachusetts artist, is the brains behind the “Park Spark” project in Cambridge. Seeing that of waste pile up didn’t sit well with him so he put together a bit of an experiment to find a use for all of those little pet waste bags. With two 500 gallon oil drums painted a rather jaunty yellow, pet owners are encouraged to use the biodegradable dog waste bags provided on site, pop them into one of the drums and turn the crank a few times to mix the waste and water. Microbes in the water breakdown the waste and give off the odorless methane gas which is then fed through a tube and used to power the old fashion street light that stands next to the drum. It’s a simple process and- as all dog owners know- is using a constantly renewable resource, but even more important that the flame it produces is how it is changing people’s opinions about what is waste. Having people actively participate in creating the power that lights the park is showing people that we need to take a more focused look at how we use our natural resources and what previously unused products can actually become resources. Next time you pass a dog park think about all of those full pet waste bags and what we could be using them for. We’ve all heard the saying that “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” In this case, Rover has a lot to offer if we just take a look around in some of the less so obvious spot. Like the bottom of your shoe.
