4 Tips to Make a Great Salesperson

Making sales can be a natural talent or can be a skill acquired with experience. Either way, when a lot of your take home pay depends on your ability to make sales, not to mention meeting sales quotas, you need to get good at it very quickly. Here are some tips and pieces of advice that should help you learn how to become a better salesman.

1. Make your presentation as good as it can be. This one is a bit of a no brainer. Make every effort to make your presentation stand out. Go the extra mile. Use animations, videos and good designs to wow the client. Get hold of a professional director or photographer for the media. If this is out of your budget, you can always find stock video footage online that you may be able to incorporate into your video to give it a professional look.

Using royalty free videos and photographs will also make the client feel like you value their experience and will show them that you are dedicated to securing their business? You can also find photographers and videographers at the local art school who may be willing to work for cheap for the experience.

2. Find the right time to approach a client. Often clients may not be in the right place to buy, their businesses may not be doing well and they have no intention of securing your services. If so, you are just wasting both parties' time if you keep pushing. Also applying pressure on a client who has no interest in buying will only sour the relationship and if they do intend to buy in the future they will never contact you.

Instead, get the client comfortable with dealing with you and tell them that you are available when they really are ready to buy. Not only will this reduce the pressure on both sides, but you will be the first person they contact when they do intend to buy.

3. Know when to walk away from clients. You will encounter clients that you are not in a position to help. The trick is to recognize this early so as little time as possible is wasted on both ends. Ask questions and listen to what the client says closely. If you realize that the client will not be able to use your product or service to his advantage, say goodbye and walk away. You can always go back to them when they really can use your help. Not only will this lay groundwork for a good relationship, he may have other contacts who can use your product.

4. Make it easy for them to buy. Once you have got the client ready to buy, make it easy for them to complete the sale. Do not put them on hold or refer them to someone else who will complete the paperwork. Do not burden them with excessive paperwork. Make it very clear to them what the next step is. Even if a client gives you a maybe, send them an email or a note immediately with clear instructions for the next step if they do intend to go through with the purchase.

There is definitely a learning curve attached to becoming a great salesman, but the most important thing is to have a product that you really believe in. That will make all the difference.
