Those who are at risk of blood clots know that without a blood thinner medication, they could end up suffering from a stroke. A rogue blood clot could end their life without notice. To reduce that risk, they take a drug like Coumadin or Xarelto. Unfortunately, that choice could also end up costing them their life. Coumadin has been around for over half a century. It was developed to be an anti-coagulant, and it has worked remarkably well for those who need it. The biggest issue, however, is that those on Coumadin have to keep going in for regular blood tests. The drug is hard to dose properly, and because of that the patient needs to be checked on regularly. With a blood thinner, there is the possibility that uncontrollable bleeding may occur. The same method that prevents blood clots from causing serious harm also can cause the body to not clot when it is actually needed. The result is that cuts don’t heal properly. If those cuts are internal, such as in the gastrointestinal tract (something that is not uncommon) internal bleeding can occur and take a heavy toll on the patient. Fortunately, for those using Coumadin, that anti-coagulant is reversible. Taking an influx of Vitamin K will reverse the effects of the drug, and allow the body to start clotting properly and thus be able to heal itself. Xarelto does not have this reversal agent. So if a patient starts to bleed internally, the only thing that can be done is they can be monitored. Until the blood clears from the system naturally (which could be days) there is nothing that can be done. This severe internal bleeding has led to a number of Xarelto lawsuits being filed around the country. The manufacturers and marketers of this drug never fully warned the public about the deadly side effects.
