“Keep on the sunny side of life”. This collection of a few words have, been over the years an inspirational quote from the Lyrics by the ‘Whites’ to that of Johnny Cash and June Carter. They are words that have been used countless times as part of the well honed lyrics of some popular tune or other. Tune, well that says a lot about my age perhaps, but you know, age is relevant to this article as it sums up the landscape here on Bali. The Bali landscape and coastline has areas for all walks of life to enjoy an idyllic holiday, from tranquil seas around the coast line of Sanur to the aggressive surf off Uluwatu and the west of the island, surf which is ideal for those Surf seekers. Indeed there is a coastline for all to follow, to enjoy whilst here on the paradise isle. Sunny side of life; well there is no one side that gets less sun, as Bali is graced with many rays which make it an ideal perfect restful holiday location. In Sanur you have the more structured areas of the Sanur village, with its bars and restaurants, chic cafes etc. The beach is of endless golden sands, wide in its formation with a paved path to its rear. The beach is home to many stylish restaurants and bars enabling a night out under the stars, wining and dining by candlelight a romantic possibility. Many fine restaurants can be found here which are ideal for families as well as the more advanced worldly wise individuals. The sea off Sanur beach is calmer than the seas off other parts of the island, the waters are warm and the slope into the water’s edge is very gentle. Sanur boasts many ideal resort hotels as well as wonderful individual beach front villas, such as the Pandawa, Bali private villas which can be seen from the pages of The Leading Villas of Bali. As for the resort hotels well no article about Sanur would be complete without reference to the famous musical “South Pacific” as the famous south pacific song Bali Hai emanated from these shores. The Bali Hyatt still operates today and with a setting as romantic now as it was 60+ years ago. Candles dress your every step as you stroll along the beach’s cobbled terraces, passing alongside manicured grass verges. On the beach of Sanur, this is home to the many colourful wooden canoe/catamaran type fishing vessels all of which depart these shores in search of a catch to sustain a lifestyle for their owner. This beach has many functions as it is a beach where many Hindu ceremonies take place, all of which are colourful in their very nature. Hinduism is the dominant religion here on Bali, it is a serene religion, passive in its behaviour, caring in its belief it is a religion about Karma; for good done today rewards will come later. As you move around the southernmost shores of Bali’s Sanur area you pass along a tranquil coastline, turning left as you reach the perimeter of the airport, passing the airport on your right, still continuing south, you reach the Nusa Dua Resort area. This area is more modern in its layout, it is structured and if you like manicured. It is an area full of 5*star resorts and shopping areas, paved walkways adorned with many fine restaurants all of which have created an atmosphere unique to them without outside influence from the throngs of traffic. It is a secure area, not that Bali is in need of tourist security, but Nusa Dua has hosted many conferences, world and Asian summits. The open walkways are reminiscent of Disney’s festival place, for it is here that you have many themed restaurants, boutique shops with crafted goods as well as brands of all descriptions. For the serious shopper in need of some forgotten item, swimwear, shirts etc then you will almost certainly find a brand to suit, if not from the boutiques then from the large and well stocked Sogo store that runs along the paved areas. It is with the Bali coastline theme that I will embark on a series of blogs to cover the many resorts that grace this beautiful isle’s coastline.
