So you're planning to take a jaunt out onto the Hauraki Gulf, ready to enjoy the views, catch the big one or just have a great day out on the water. It's a popular venture in the warmer months, though with a good forecast and a warm jacket, many would say it's the perfect way to escape the winter blues as well. If you've done it before you've probably got a fair idea of what to look for in terms of expectations. If you haven't, read on to discover what you can expect. First, choose a local charter company to work with. You want one that offers you a full service, providing all your fishing equipment. While you can opt out of using the provided equipment, it's good to know what is available. Work out a budget after getting some ball park figures from the company that appeals. It will vary depending on how many people you want to take out, and how far afield you plan to go. Most people take a charter out for a full day, but there are options to take one for longer, and explore outside of the Hauraki Gulf. Just because you've chartered an Auckland boat hire, doesn't mean you can't go out of the city area, such as to Goat Island or the Coromandel. It's all down to your time and budget constraints. It's a good idea to plan for contingencies. Most require a good sized deposit and then the balance payable before you leave the wharf. What happens if the weather is bad? Is the deposit refundable? Can you postpone to another date? You may need to ask about whether you and your group will need a fishing license or if this is covered on the boat? There are little things that can make a huge difference to your day. Is there room inside to sit if the weather gets a little hot or wet? Is there somewhere for someone to lie down if they don't feel too good? If you are planning to take your family, are there safety precautions you need to know about and is it set up for children? Will you need to pick up some food for them down at the Viaduct before leaving, or will they supply food for the children as well? It's a good idea to bring a few things even if they do say everything is provided. Sun hats, sunscreen, sunglasses and a good jacket are all important as is a camera to record the day. It's amazing to view the city when you're close to Rangitoto, and it's a view you'll want to remember long after you've left your Auckland boat hire.
