How to Build a Chicken Coop

Pets
Raising chickens is an enjoyable, beneficial but hard hobby. It provides you food (eggs and chicken meat) and fertilizer for your plants. Like other pets and animals, chicken must have their own house called a chicken coop. Even a novice carpenter or a simple person can do it by themselves provided they have plan on how they want the coop to look like. You won’t be needing too much carpentry tools and building plans in making one. Just take into consideration the needs of the chicken for their daily survival as guidelines in building your chicken coop.

Some considerations in planning to build a coop are as follows:

  1. Consider putting the coop in a high corner. This will ensure you that the coop will not accumulate water during rainy season.
  2. Determine the area needed for the chicken coop. Hens and birds need at least 1 ½ to 2 square feet per bird inside the coop.
  3. Design your layout in a piece of paper. Make sure you have door big enough for you to get the eggs inside. Put windows for enough ventilation to avoid summer heat and to permit the sun to warm the inside during cold season.
  4. Look for materials that you may use for building the coop. Scrap materials such as used ply wood can be utilize to minimize expenses and labor.
  5. Sketch the design of the coop inside. Make sure that there is a nest box and enough space for the chickens. One nest box for every 4 to 5 chickens and 6 to 10 inches of space for every chicken.
  6. Buy materials that are essential for your chicken coop like chicken wires for fencing and supplies for feeding the chickens.
When building your chicken coop, take into consideration the following guidelines:
  1. Build your chicken coop facing south. Slant the roof to prevent the rain from getting inside the chicken coop.
  2. Protect windows by covering it with chicken wires to prevent predators and other animals from coming in. if you have budget, a sliding glass will protect your chicken without blocking off the sun from getting inside.
  3. Put a lock on the door to secure it when necessary especially when you need to leave for a while.
  4. Position the perches and the nest boxes beside the wall to maximize space inside.
  5. Put a fence in your yard to enclose the coop. you may use a chicken wire or other fencing materials that are durable and long-lasting. It should be at least 4 feet high. Bury the fence at least 12 inches deep to keep it strong and safe. This will keep your chicken from going out of your yard and for the predators from coming into your chicken.
  6. Put a net in your yard to prevent the owls and hawks from preying on your chickens. This can also help in screening the amount of sun that will enter in your yard and in the coop. putting some plants and grass can also protect your chickens.
  7. Hang the waters and the feeders at the same level as the chickens back. Do not put them on the ground as they will only accumulate dirt and bacteria.
Keep your chickens dry to protect them from cold weather and disease. In cold areas, put a more protective covering to lessen the cold. Putting a lamp in the coop will not just provide lighting but additional heat as well. Putting some litters on the coop floor and in the yard will minimize your chicken from scratching on the floor or ground and pooping everywhere. Take off branches that may be hanging in your yard and other stepping structure. Your chicken might fly and step on these and may take them away from their place. These can also make other predators from coming into your yard.

Whether you are building a small or big chicken coop or one or more coop, following these guidelines will keep you on track. Having a perfect coop will not just make your chicken happy but you also, giving you more eggs to collect and more chicken to hatch. You can also purchase a chicken coop if don’t have time building one, and if you have the budget.

Before you build a coop, know what chickens to buy. When you are doing that, you need to get the chicken facts.
