Unlike any other dog training sessions, Maltese training is a little bit different. That’s because, by nature Maltese are calm dogs. They don’t prefer doing much exercise or going for walks. Instead they like socializing with humans and other dog members. In a nutshell, they require companionship, friendly environment and loving care. Maltese training can become a real challenging experience for owners. Even though are intelligent dogs and love to please their owners, they can be stubborn at times. However, if trained from an early age (puppyhood stage) your Maltese can learn a number of tricks. If you are patient enough, Maltese training can be an enjoyable experience. You too can make your dog a well-behaved pooch with proper dog training. While you are training your Maltese, ensure that your dog is comfortable with it. As a pet owner you should make certain that your dog gets all the benefits during the dog training sessions. Throughout the Maltese training sessions, spend as much time as possible with your dog and help him socialize. Before starting to trick train your dog, you need to give him a course for obedience training. Ideally this should start as early as when your puppy is 10 weeks old. This will make your Maltese calmer. An obedience dog training session will ensure that your Maltese will obey all your commands and abide by all the rules that you set for him. Three simple tricks your Maltese can learn: The “Sit” Command The most basic command is probably training your dog to sit. However, it also forms the basic training sessions for your Maltese. It will be the ground work that will prove to be useful for the future to come. Always have a treat around while you train your dog. Hold the treat in your hand above the dog. Your dog will try to look up at the treat. Once he falls down on his bottom, and sits, say in a firm and loud voice, “sit”. Then give the treat and a lot of praise. Repeat the same method. After a few times, remove the treat and simply do it with your hand. Ensure that you always give a lot of breaks between each performance. Catch an object Maltese dogs love to catch any object with their mouths. First give the sit command. Then take a small soft toy and throw it gently in his direction. Most of the times, he will jump and try to catch it with his mouth as they are generally quick and agile. Once he is successful, say, “good boy” and give him a treat. Repeat this session a few more times. Roll over Maltese by nature love to roll around and wiggle a lot. You can simply lay your dog on the floor and roll him over. Give the command “roll”, while he is doing it. Once done, give him a treat and praise. Since rolling over is a natural instinct of your dog, your verbal command will help your dog associate better with the trick. There are other several tricks such as “finding a toy” and down command that you can teach your dog. However, you cannot expect your Maltese to perform several tricks from day one of the session. As any other dog training sessions, you need to be patient and consistent with your dog. However, your Maltese puppies are usually intelligent breeds.
