Dogs age faster than we do. We need to know the signs and how to care for them as they enter their senior years. As your dog ages you will start to notice he is slower than usual. He doesn’t quite get up as fast as he use to, or is sleeping longer than usual. (If that’s possible) But, there are still several things you can do to keep him younger, for as long as possible. Exercise is a very important part of a dog’s routine. Starting exercise as a puppy can make is older years easier. By exercising your dog on a regular basis, it will help strengthen his immune system, his heart and help his joints and limbs stay limber. Your dog will be at less risk of developing arthritis than a dog who has not been exercised on a regular basis. As your dog gets older, you will of course have to change the amount or type of exercise your give him. Perhaps instead of run, you can take him for a walk. It will be important to start watching their diet, feeding them food that is made for senior dogs or less active. You want to try and keep your dog from becoming overweight.. It is natural for a dog to develop hearing problems as he ages. He will not react as quickly when you call him, because he may not hear you. Or, he will no longer bark when the doorbell rings. Being sure your pet has a quality bed to sleep on and he has enough room to be able to stretch out his body. There are many beds on the market that are made to make your senior get the quality of sleep he needs. If your senior dog gets to the point where it becomes difficult for him to go for walks, take him out with you in the car. This will help keep him stimulated and happy. He may need a helping hand or two getting into the car. You don’t want him to try and jump, possibly injuring himself. At one point you may want to think about getting your dog a ramp to make it easier for both of you. Be creative in activities as your best friend becomes a senior. We all get their at one time or another and we would all want someone to care for us. So, do our precious pets. All dogs can age differently. Larger dogs usually age faster than smaller dogs. We just have to be aware of the signs. But, remember the more exercise, love and watching their diet, the better his older years will be and you will enjoy him longer. Our dogs become such a big part of our family, watching them slow down in their aging years is difficult. So, love them and nurture them for as long as you can.
