Piano lessons! Have you ever met anyone who regrets learning to play the piano? No! People only regret NOT learning to play the piano. This truth is an important one and worth remembering, especially when it comes to children and piano lessons. Your child is not mature enough to decide today whether or not he or she wants to know how to play the piano, but you, as the parent, are well-placed to make this decision. Here are a few things to remember about children and piano lessons: - Not every child will love to play, but every child can learn to play. Begin the process with the attitude that piano playing is a skill you want your child to have, like reading or math, because it will enrich their life. They don’t have to love it, they just need to learn it. In truth, most students struggle to love piano in the early stages because it’s hard, the music can be tedious, and practicing isn’t fun. True love of piano comes later, when the student transforms from “someone who takes piano lessons” into a “pianist."
- Every piano student will experience ups and downs. You can expect your child to have times when the piano is played every day and times when the piano is never touched. Stick with it. Don’t let an episode of the piano doldrums derail an important goal. Steady and consistent piano lessons are the key. Ride out the doldrums patiently, remembering that they are normal and that they are not necessarily a sign that your child is not meant to play the piano.
- Your child doesn't need you to correct their playing; that’s what the teacher is for. Your child needs you to be their biggest fan. A comment such as, “Oh, sweetie! I love that song! I especially like the way you play softly and then get louder. Will you play it for me again?” is almost guaranteed to get your child to play a song repeatedly. Listen to their music. Tell them what you love. Make up silly words to their songs and sing along. Convince them you love their music and they will play for you, every time.
Piano lessons in Manhattan are readily available, so there is no reason your child can’t start learning to play today. You won’t regret it and neither will they.
