In these days of online networking, it is possible for someone to believe that the more contacts they have or the more business social networks they belong to, the greater the rate of their success. Racking up the numbers just for the sake of it will not do any magic to your endeavors. Even employers today want to get someone who stands out from the thousands of resumes they receive through job applications an job networking sites. If you want to become a high quality oriented networker, there are a few tips that will help you in that direction: Forget about quantity: When you are invited to a networking event, remind yourself that it’s not a competition on who will hand out the most business cards; speed networking rarely delivers the results you are looking for. You want to make sure that you use networking events and any social network sites for business people as an opportunity to develop quality relationships. No one wants to spend time with a person who is in a hurry to finish the conversation at hand before they dash to the next person; no potential employer feels warm when dealing with someone who is always looking over their shoulder. Make real connections: After online networking leads you to a face to face meeting in an event, take time to explore how you could be of help to that acquaintance who seems to get attuned. You don’t have to make contact with all the members of the business social network you are meeting for the event to be termed a success; just one quality contact is actually a success. Remind yourself that you are not the only person who may make contact with that potential employer, you need to give them a compelling reason why they need to meet you again after the event or else they will make time for someone else; it takes time to make yourself useful to another person. Exchange stories: Business social networking is more than being the professional objective you describe at the top of your resume. Networking gives you the opportunity to tell your story as you put across your personal competitive advantage as a human being; what is it can you do in a way that no one else can? At the same time, listen to other people tell their stories and learn to ask questions whose answers will deliver the unique qualities of the person you are dealing with. Help others: The best way to become popular in a social network site for business professionals is your ability to provide solutions to the problems of your new contacts. Try to respond to other people’s requests as soon as possible. This way, you will create value in other people’s lives and you will be setting yourself up for help from others. When you make yourself a useful resource to your contacts, it makes you valuable to their contact as well.
