Most blogger’s wonder why some sites receives tens of thousands of visitors a month while others only see a few hundred. It is obvious that these blogs attract many visitors due to their unique content and topic choice. A review of these sites reveals important information about the nature of successful blogging. Pick Your Topic: These topics are considered conventional by nature and have a larger readership base. Looking over these high-income and highly visited sites I noticed that politics, technology, celebrity news and sport information appeared to be the main topic of interest. A topic like “growing yellow tomatoes” isn’t likely to product a strong following on the net. Understanding Your Readers: Nearly all of these high-traffic sites understand the demographics of their readership by offering polls, utilizing web statistics, and conducting surveys. Advertise Away: In the blogs that I reviewed every one had lots of advertising. Most of this advertising was in the form of logo’s or web graphics on the right column of the main topic. Many of them used Google Adsense and BlogAds (service that connects bloggers and advertisers). Pictures: All of the sites visited utilized graphics and pictures on their site. Thus a boring design with few graphics and/or pictures is unlikely to retain visitors. Place pictures and utilize alt tags where appropriate. Logo: Every one of these blogs had a logo or graphic title that designated their blog as different from everyone else. What we learn from visiting these sites is that a busy appearance, utilizing graphics/pictures, interesting topics in major categories, as well as many different advertising methods helps to make these blogs successful. Aligning your shabby blog to what the “big boys” are doing is necessary if you hope to be as successful as them.
