How A New Driver Can Stay Safe On The Road

Law
Learning to drive for the first time is an exciting moment. You are in the driver's seat, your instructor is next to you, the adrenaline is pumping, and you are ready to go. After going through your driving course, you probably feel more comfortable behind the wheel. The adrenaline rush might not be as pronounced when you put those keys in the ignition. This is old stuff. You have been driving for a year now, so you know everything, right? The truth is that many drivers, as they get more and more comfortable driving, start to become reckless. The recklessness is not intentional, but merely a result of their feeling at ease with their skills after so much practice. In order to stay safe on the road, there are a few safety tips that you should brush up on every once in a while.

Safety Tips

1. Follow the speed limit. Perhaps when you first learned to drive, you had a hard time getting up to speed because the car was just too much to handle. Now that you have been driving for a time, it is easy to get there, as well as to pass it up. Be careful to always follow the speed limit. They are posted for a reason: protection for you and the other people on the road.

2. Get rid of distractions. If that means you drive by yourself so that your friends cannot distract you, then don't let them in the car. Cell phones, iPods, makeup, and food are all good examples of distractions that will get your eyes off the road. You might conclude that it is only for a second, but most car accidents occur in seconds, with the driver not even being able to comprehend what is happening until it is over. That second that you take to look at a text could cost you your life. If necessary, don't even bring the distractions in the car with you.

3. Wear a seatbelt. Statistics show that sixty three percent of the people killed in automobile accidents were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact. Seatbelts are not just there for decoration or to give you a false sense of security. They actually do a good job of protecting the people who wear them. Even if you are a safe driver, there are unfortunately those out there on the road who are not. You can't control their actions, and you could be involved in an accident. The best way to protect yourself in such a situation is to buckle up before you put the car in drive.

4. Stay in your own lane. Many people who are in a hurry think that they have to weave in and out of traffic to get to their destination on time. Interestingly, this often has the opposite result. Staying in your lane will allow you to just move with the flow of traffic. Of course, you will occasionally need to move over or go around an extremely slow driver, but trying to weave in and out of typical traffic could result in an accident. It could also cause other drivers to have road rage if you cut them off, leading to dangerous confrontations.

If you are a new driver, make sure to pay attention to safe driving tips when you come across them. Nobody is invincible. Take some time to review the safety tips that you have found so that you can enjoy many years on the road.
