It's not advisable to just rely on hunches or gut feelings when you're selecting a niche for an online business. While you will want to pick something that is interesting somewhat familiar to you, the most important consideration is whether it will be profitable. It's not complicated to go about selecting the appropriate niche. Fortunately, there are quite a few tools available for free to help you with Internet Marketing. One of the most important is free keyword tools that assist you in selecting keywords. One of the better ones is Wordtracker, which offers a free version. There is also Google's keyword tool, which offers the advantage of using actual results from Google searches. Once you have gathered a list of potential niches, input each of them into a Google search. Then evaluate the number of websites related to each niche on the list. Crosscheck your results against the Keyword Efficiency Index. This term is alternatively referred to as KEI. Note the number of websites belonging to all the competition. Take the number of keyword searches per month and divide it the number of competing websites. A relatively high KEI hovers about the 50 mark. So you know you’ve got a lucrative niche if the figure you arrive at is greater than 50. Take stock of the number of competitors put forth by Google. The search engine should be getting you the "Keyword" you were looking for and now perform an assessment of it. Take care to search for it verbatim with the quotes around it and capital letters. Note the number of results you see. If you discover that the niche is overcrowded beforehand, you should consider looking for alternate options.
