RightTel, Iran's first W-CDMA/HSPA mobile network operator Tamin Telecom, is being condemned by four Iranian ayatollahs (A high-ranking Shiite religious authority regarded as worthy of imitation in matters of religious law and interpretation) for "undermining the country's religious foundation and encouraging immorality." In a report by Al Monitor, RightTel was said to be the subject of fatwa by each ayatollahs. Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi writes, "The decadence and corruption associated with [Rightel’s] use outweighs its benefits." Shirazi was also known for issuing a fatwa against domesticated dogs that led Iran to ban pet advertisements. There is also a site that posts notices from Grand Ayatollahs Ja'far Sobhani, Hosein Noori Hamadani, and Seyyed Muhammad Ali Alavi Gorgani named Mirage Raytl (RightTel Mirage). Such website includes comments from other hardliners who oppose RighTel. However, the site also highlights that it is not "anti-technology, just decrying the company's application of it." The site also posts political cartoons depicting pornography viewing through mobile internet. Ghorgani said "[Mobile Internet will] jeopardize the public chastity." Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei previously ran afoul of filtering measures while trying to condemn anti-filtering tools, and the country is said to be launching its own domestic internet this year.
