If you too have received a warning by Google for unnatural inbound links for your website, here is a good news for you. Google’s web spam team head, Matt Cutts recently announced the launch of a new tool that helps you get rid of those unnatural links that could get you a penalty and adversely affect your rankings. How does it Support Your Link Clean-up Effort? In the wake of so many algo updates by Google, especially the Penguin, its seriousness towards supporting high-quality and genuine websites has come to the fore. Anything that is of low-quality associated to your website, can lead to a Google penalty. So to prevent a penalty or to recover from it, removing those bad links is very important, and the link disavow tool comes handy. This much-anticipated tool is designed in a way that you can inform Google about all the unwanted inbound links for site and get them removed. It says – “If you believe your site's ranking is being harmed by low-quality links you do not control, you can ask Google not to take them into account when assessing your site.” With this, you can clearly notify Google to ignore the low quality links coming to your site. Who needs this tool? A number of people, mainly those who haven’t yet got a warning by Google, aren’t too keen on using this tool. This is so probably because they have been playing safe with their link building process and have only got the ethical links for their sites. However, despite their ethical ways, their ranking has somehow taken a toll. For these website owners, negative SEO doesn’t probably exist…but it does! Negative search engine optimisation can be in the form of spam content scraping, reputation management spam or deliberate attempt to affect your rankings by any of your competitor – all these attempts can lead to creation of unnatural links for you. So either you can go directly to the source of your bad link and ask them to be removed, or can use this tool and notify Google about all the bad links that are to be ignored. Use it as a Preventive as well as a Remedial Tool… Those who haven’t yet got a warning from Google for unnatural links should use this tool to remove those links to prevent any action against your site. Also, if you have received the warnings and the site rankings have been affected, it is wise to use it as a remedial tool. …But with Caution While the tool has been launched for a good reason, it also comes with a warning. As per the warning that comes with the tool - “This is an advanced feature and should only be used with caution. If used incorrectly, this feature can potentially harm your site's performance in Google's search results. We recommend that you only disavow backlinks if you believe you have a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links pointing to your site, and if you are confident that the links are causing issues for you.” If you don’t understand the tool, it is best to seek help or don’t use it all, because inappropriate use can cost you your site’s rankings. However, if you think you have uploaded a wrong list of disavow links, you can delete the existing file and start all over again. Nevertheless, this is surely a welcome-tool for most of the search engine optimisers who have been busy with the link clean-up efforts in order to prevent/recover from Google penalty and get good rankings.
