Safety When You Are On A Cruise

Cruise ships are rapidly becoming a popular new way to take that breather you desperately deserve. While they are packed with entertainment options, there are certainly things the reveler ought to be wary of in order to maximize their safety and as such continue on with their enjoyment.

One of the first things that you should know how to do is how to operate the lifeboat. In the event of a catastrophe, the more people that are educated as to proper lifeboat procedure the more likely it will be that you, and others, will survive. The lifeboat, especially out in the middle of the ocean, is your best chance to get help, so knowing how to use it, and being able to assist others, will save many lives. This also will come with a great sense of personal accomplishment and reward should your knowledge be called into active duty. As boats are required to carry a certain number of lifeboats, the loss of even one due to improper operation can mean life or death to some of the inhabitants of the ship.

Another good safety tip for a cruise is to stay in populated areas of the ship. Cruise ships are like miniature cities. They have bars, casinos, restaurants, and even clubs. Just like any other city, there are also crimes committed on board. Though there are security staffs working, and even police officers, sometimes ships are notoriously understaffed, and the lack of technology and equipment on board can make proving any wrongdoing difficult. To keep yourself safe, stay around others, so in the worst possible case, you will have witnesses.

When you go on onshore excursions, be sure to go with other travelers. This will prevent you from not only getting mugged or taken advantage of because you are a foreigner, but this will also maximize your enjoyment! A lot of foreigners will try to take an American's money through scams and undervaluation simply because it is so valuable to them. Going with other travelers gives you several people to stand up for you if a merchant tries to give you a sour deal. In foreign countries that are hostile to Americans, going on shore with others will provide security and strength in numbers.

A tip for cruise safety, just as for home safety, is to always keep your cabin door locked. One of the last things that you want is to have valuables stored in your cabin and come back from a night of partying to find them stolen. Or you may be enjoying a night of lovemaking with your significant other and it can be rudely interrupted by someone barging in on your unlocked door. One final obvious reason to lock your door is especially if you are alone. Crime can happen to anyone at anytime. If your door is locked it is likely that any potential perpetrator will simply move on from your room and on to another less secure victim.

If you are on a cruise, it is obvious you will partake in a few alcoholic beverages. It is important to remember that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. There are laws in effect at sea when it comes to drinking just as there are on shore. Also, falling from cruise ships can happen! If you have had a bit too much to drink and lose your footing on the deck, you can fall into the ocean. Tragedies like this have happened!

For women traveling alone on a cruise ship you may want to consider bringing mace or pepper spray along. While most ships won't allow full fledged fire arms, these little defense mechanisms will function as a deterrent and provide you with an added piece of mind.

Cruise ships are a widely used alternative to traditional vacations. You can enjoy the beauty of the sea while on a gigantic party boat. It is serene, peaceful, and tons of fun. But to get the most out of your experience, it is important to follow a few pointers to keep you safe throughout the duration of your cruise. From locking your cabin, to watching the amounts of alcohol you drink, all of the tips will keep you safe.
