Save money on your energy bills by choosing the right window insulation

Home Repair
If you're looking for practical ways to save money on your energy bills, you could find that window insulation is the perfect step to take. There are many options out there - and the one you choose will largely depend on your budget, as well as your current window type.

Of course, choosing the right window insulation comes with more benefits than simply cutting your energy costs. In fact, it is an excellent step towards green home improvement, significantly reducing your carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, it will also help to keep your home that little bit warmer when you don't have the heating on - something that we are all especially keen to do during the chilly winter months!

Perhaps one of the best methods of window insulation is double glazing. These days you can install energy-efficient windows, which are a particularly good option if you currently have single glazing, or if your double glazing was added before 2002.

This type of window will help you to retain your home's 'natural' heat and prevent warmth from escaping. Therefore, you will need to use your heating less and should end up with lower bills.

The cost of energy-efficient windows varies depending on the type of frame you use - and they are compatible with a wide variety, from timber to steel and PVC-U. While the initial outlay for this kind of home improvement may seem off-putting, don't forget that you will reap the benefits for years to come in the form of lower bills.

Indeed, you should find that you recoup the cost of the windows over several years.

And you'll discover that by choosing this option, you will be reducing your carbon footprint - something many households are now seeing as a priority. For example, if you currently have single-glazing, by implementing energy-efficient windows you could cut your home's carbon emissions by 0.3 tonnes.

However, it may be that you are looking to make changes to your current windows, rather than replace them entirely.

If this is the case, you have several options available - and you can choose to make the alterations yourself or hire a recommended tradesman to carry them out for you.

While you can make small changes to your habits that can have an effect, such as shutting the curtains at night in each room to lower heat loss, you may well find that draughts are the cause of higher heating bills.

Allowing heat to escape and cold air into your home, draughts are a common problem. Thankfully, there are simple steps you can take to reduce their effect.

Draught insulation is available in several forms and if you are on a tight budget, foam strips may be best for you. While these cannot be used on sliding windows, they are ideal for other types. However, these generally do not last as long as other kinds of insulation, so be prepared to replace these more frequently.

If you are able to spend a little more, you might like to opt for metal or plastic strips which come equipped with brushers. These tend to be more resilient than the foam variety, therefore they should remain effective for longer.

No matter which type you choose, you should make sure it fits the gaps you wish to plug well. If the strips are too small, they will be ineffective at stopping the draught, while if they are too big they will be compressed and can later mean that you aren't able to open the windows.

While installing them can be relatively simple, if you are not used to DIY tasks or if your home is particularly old, choosing recommended tradesmen in your area could be well advised. By opting for a professional with good reviews from other customers, you can rest safe in the knowledge that you will receive thorough and effective insulation for your windows.

Of course, no matter which option you select, you will find that window insulation helps you to reduce your energy bills, as well as keep your home a little warmer when you're not using the heating.

Helping to lower your carbon footprint, too, these kinds of changes can go some way to making your property more environmentally friendly.

If you're keen to make a green home improvement, why not choose window insulation? With options such as double glazing, you could significantly reduce your bills. Find recommended tradesmen with Rated People today.
