If you’ve spent any time perusing the internet for knowledge regarding aluminum windows, vinyl windows, or any other variation or permutation of window, you’ve probably landed on the Croft website more than once. We’ve been slowly but surely making our way through a glossary of window manufacturer terminology in the hopes of shedding some light on the process of window manufacturing and the important things to know when considering vinyl replacement windows or aluminum replacement windows for your home or office. There are a lot of options and vague terminology that can make the process of understanding the industry a little more challenging. That is what we’ve aimed to help do away with. So, dispensing with the small talk, let’s get back to it and pick up where we left of. We’re going to look at a fairly obscure term (three fairly obscure terms actually), so hopefully they’ll help you out in an obscure situation one day. The first term is Mullion. A mullion is essentially a vertical or horizontal member between two window units or sliding glass doors used to provide major structural support. This is critical in complex home designs where windows are used with greater frequency or in more intricate layouts where extra support is beneficial. The concept of a mullion is not limited to complex home designs either. It is a concept that is used in day to day home design as well. So, next time you’re checking out a home and marveling at its structural members between its windows or sliding glass doors, know that, in fact, you’re marveling at mullions. Another window term that we’re going to look at is a muntin. A muntin is a secondary framing member that helps hold the window panes in the window sash. This is an important element of window design and shouldn’t be overlooked. In keeping with the structural theme of our discussion today, we’re going to look at one more window manufacturer term that will really get your wheels a turnin’ for aluminum windows and vinyl windows. The term is muntin grilles. Muntin grilles are wood, metal, or plastic grids that are designed for a single-light sash in order to give the appearance of muntins. The benefit of muntin grilles, or false muntins, is that they are removable – which can make cleaning a window a much easier affair. So with those nuggets of knowledge, go forth into the world!
