We can have our share of outdoor living space-if we plan it carefully, combining architectural arid garden planning and planting in such a way as to defeat our, local prevailing winds, or at least reduce their effect to a minimum. Not nearly enough attention has been paid to this aspect of home planning in the past. We have verandahs; certainly, but how many of them contribute anything to the pattern of, our home life? Sheltered outdoor living rooms should be a feature in every house plan, a place for the youngest members of the family to play in or to take their day-time naps, where the housewife can have her lunch in sun or shade and where friends can be entertained without sacrificing their quota of sunshine. The upkeep of such an area should not add materially to housework. , It must be self contained, and its furnishings as simple and dust proof as possible. The accompanying sketch illustrates one method of achieving a pleasant retreat in an average-sized suburban house and outdoor garden in Melbourne. It has a western aspect for two reasons, first because rooms facing west require some sort of protection from the afternoon sun in summer and, therefore, invite an extended roof line or porch, and because the average housewife is too busy in the morning to have the time to sit out of doors. The afternoon sun will be more likely to coincide with her leisure moments. By keeping the roofed area fairly shallow, the room within would not be too dark in winter, yet it would obtain shade in summer. If further protection were; needed canvas or split cane outdoor blinds could be suspended from the edge of the roof and strapped down by cleats or slots in the floor. The sheltered section could contain built-in cupboards to house items used in this outdoor living room, but requiring a certain amount of protection from the weather furniture, toys, tricycles, or cushions thereby eliminating "fetching and carrying." The floor is paved. This could be carried out in attractive brickwork, tiles, stone, or concrete blocks to provide a logical transition between house and garden. All sorts of attractive arrangements could be featured by the use of potted plants if the terrace were not to be used as a playground for children. In this plan children are catered for with a sandpit (ort paddling pool). Planting and fencing play and important part in any scheme of this kind, as these provide windbreaks and shade. A relatively small deciduous tree planted near the house and included in the terrace design brushwood fence just high and would add much charm, and a long enough to give shelter from the chill south, winds would be desirable if the boundary fence or the form of the house did not supply this.
