Have Honda Generators Taken the Top Spot?

Home Improvement,Home Repair,Manufacturing
A generator can be a fairly big investment, so you’ll want to make sure you get the right one for your needs. If you’ve been doing any research on the matter at all, you’ve probably seen the great Honda versus Yamaha debate. In fact, the two brands practically dominate the message boards when it comes to generators. So the question remains. Which is better; the Yamaha generator or the Honda generator? To decide, we’ll need to compare specifics.

The first thing both brands list is their weight. Honda generators are much lighter than Yamahas, making them easier for portability, which is ideal for recreational generators. On the other hand, Yamaha generators put out more wattage, which means you can power more of your toys. If you’ve got a big RV and would like to run the AC while using its other resources, you might opt for the bigger watt output. Additionally, the Yamaha comes with a spike output feature that you can run temporarily, which is perfect when you need to get that AC started. It takes a lot of power, but once it’s running regularly, both it and the generator can settle into a more sustainable groove.

The noise of both generator brands is practically indiscernible, with Honda listing its max of 59 only one decibel above Yamaha. Both are touted as being quiet, which is nice when you’d like to actually enjoy the sounds of nature on your next trip to the great outdoors.

The 2000w range Honda generators can run much longer than the same category of Yamahas. This is probably because they put out less wattage. Normally, you wouldn’t run your AC the entire time you’re using your RV, nor would you need the full output of power the Yamaha gives you over a consistent period of time. Honda conserves energy by matching output to your needs. This is a nice feature. It means Honda generators use less fuel, which is yet another benefit. When it comes to the 3000w category though, both can run around 20 hours at 2800 watts, so you really only get the energy benefit from the smaller Honda generator.

Both offer two year warranties, but Yamaha’s is limited and the Honda might not last past its 2000 hour limit. The Yamaha does offer more features though, like a fuel gage and a petcock, which is helpful. In actuality though, you pay more for the Yamaha, so those extras cost you extra. The Honda tends to be cheaper than the Yamaha in its smaller models and slightly more expensive in its larger models. This leads us to the conclusion that if you’re going to need 2600w or less, the Honda is probably the better choice. If you’re really going for power and need something in the 3000w range, then the Yamaha might be the best choice for you.

So the answer to the great Honda versus Yamaha debate? With Honda, bigger isn’t necessarily better. If you need something small though, it actually does come out on top.
