A large number of homeowners are experiencing what seems to be a plague of beefed up mosquitoes. Even though these insects resemble giant mosquitoes, they are actually Crane Flies. While mosquitoes bite, Crane Flies do not. Not all of them have mouths and those that do use them for sipping nectar. Crane Flies are very unique looking, with long slender torsos, long legs and large wings. Given the right conditions, they can grow up to 60 mm long. The necessity of a water or a moist environment for the growth of offspring is like that of mosquitoes. Crane Flies have a number of aliases including mosquito hawk, mosquito or “Skeeter Eater”, and, in the United Kingdom, Daddy Long Legs. Even though they are often referred to as "Skeeter Eaters", Crane Flies do not eat mosquitoes. Crane Flies are poor flyers and can be seen even wobbling during flight. They like light, which is the reason they usually gather near porches and patios. Luckily, they usually have one set of offspring yearly making them temporarily irritating during the short time they live instead of a permanent pest. The Crane flies inability to inject their strong venom into human skin is an often stated, but considered a fallacy. This urban legend is not true; the Crane Fly is non-venomous and contains no venom. For most situations, just letting the water evaporate or the temperature to rise will get rid of these pests. On the other hand, the environment that they go for is the same that is favored by mosquitoes, which means that mosquitoes might also make an big appearance.
