Safety is the people’s right and the government’s duty. Drainage is the removal of fluid from an area. The term drainage is very commonly used by plumbers referring to the drainage system in homes, by engineers referring to sub-surface passage of water of a city into the sea or any large water body and also in surgery with respect to the fluid or blood of the body. Draining fluid is a process that is very vital to maintain a balance in the amount of water that is to be used and the amount of water that is to be discarded. It is the government’s duty to ensure efficient drainage systems in the different cities of a nation. Many a times, the consequences of heavy rains, tsunamis etc are unimaginably disastrous due to poor drainage systems. In countries like India where the rains are heavy and harsh, governments often fail to prepare the area prior to monsoons. When the monsoon hits the city hard, the entire area gets flooded and this almost always results in heavy losses of property, food, resources and sometimes even human lives. Indians succumb to these mishaps every year. Hilly areas are termed as natural drains because of the effect of gravity on flowing water. These areas do not need high profile drainage systems during monsoons. However, low lying areas and plateaus are most harshly affected during water related natural calamities. This is because, all the water from the high lying areas gushes down, crashing into everything that comes in its way. Drainage systems in these cities should be built well before the rains begin to avoid flooding and damage. Planting trees is a way of slowing down the water pressure as the roots tend to hold water back in the soil. Drains can be of two types – surface drains that are smaller and sub-surface drains that are larger. Drains in big cities are usually built under the surface, and are called sub-surface channels. These channels are interconnected and finally meet to join a larger drain. All this is built beneath the city roads. The larger drains meet together and are finally directed toward the sea. This is a simple procedure in coastal areas. However, it is harder and expensive to have efficient drainage systems in cities that are geographically situated away from large water bodies such as oceans and seas. It is very important for a city to have good drainage system. Safety is the people’s right and the government’s duty.
