Many people think that just plain cutting the grass on your lawn is fine as long as your lawn turns up clean and cut. It certainly sounds as if this is a simple task that only involves pushing a lawn mower around just as if you were just pushing a cart through a grocery store. But no. Take it from the experts; there's more to cutting the grass than just pushing a mower around. For one, we should not cut the grass too short. Many people do this in hopes that the grass would grow more slowly and therefore give the folks more time for leisure before having to mow their lawn again (which is not really true because grass actually grows faster when cut short). Many do it because they like the putting-green look on their lawn. But this is really not a good thing. Cutting the grass too short, nearing decapitation, would render the grass too weak to fight for its growth. Remember that grass needs to absorb nutrients and increase the amount of chlorophyll, and in order to do this there has to be enough of it left after the cutting. You don't really have to cut the grass to its shortest possible height. In mowing your lawn, what is really important is how even your lawn looks after cutting the grass. It does not matter whether you cut the grass too short or if the grass is still too tall. If the lawn has evenly cut grass, then that's what matters the most. It would be great if you developed a habit of mowing your lawn often and only lightly cutting the grass each time. This is the recommended rule of thumb, and it will help keep a healthy lawn. This means mowing the lawn every four or five days but it is worth it when you get to see the results. Now when you mow your lawn regularly, and with only small clippings of grass, then you can just leave the clippings. They would be small enough to disappear into your lawn and they return nutrients to the soil as they decompose. Take note that this is only if you have short clippings. Big clippings, and piles of clippings, are not included. These are actually bad news and should be cleaned up. It is also advisable to alter your mowing routes now and then. There's nothing wrong with sticking to one route of mowing your lawn, out of habit or convenience. But you might want to change your route now and then to get a new look to your lawn. Observe closely and you will notice that the color of the grass can appear to have a different shade when you pass it over with a mower in a different path. With this, and with practice and creativity, you can learn to make creative patterns on your lawn with a mower! Try changing your mowing route and see what you can do to improve the aesthetic look of your lawn. Just always remember these simple rules when you mow your lawn. Mow high and don't cut the grasses too deep on the ground. Leave small clips on the ground for extra nutrients to your lawn. Last but not least, make sure that you keep your mower tuned up and its blades sharp for a clean job of cutting the grass the right way! The article is written and submitted by Anna Poelo.
