People today can find themselves spending a lot of time sitting in desk chairs. Not only at the office, but eating in front of the computer at home, or spending late night hours on the internet in front of a desktop computer. An un-ergonomic office chair can make all this time uncomfortable at best, and lastingly painful at worse. A chair that is too low or too high can result in neck pain. A chair with no lumbar support can result in shoulder or back pain. In extreme cases, this pain can be long-lasting, and continue even after a person has left the offending char. All these are reasons why it is important to invest in a quality, ergonomic, comfortable office char. The Herman Miller Aeron chair is widely considered to be at the very top end of ergonomic office chairs. But, unsurprisingly, the high end comes with a high price tag. Websites carry the Aeron chair for a whopping $869.00, which some might feel is far too much to pay for an office chair. Fortunately for the penny-conscious, Herman Miller also makes a slightly less expensive ergonomic chair-- the Mirra—which they offer for $599.00. This might still seem like a lot of money but consider-- if a person spends only their 8 hour day sitting in the office chair, that is 1/3 of the entire 24 hour day! A third of a person’s life could easily be spent sitting in an office chair! When thought about that way, $599.00 suddenly doesn’t seem like so much money. Especially since the Herman Miller chairs are very finely made and thus probably wouldn’t need to be replaced as much as a cheaper, less well made office chair. However, if $599.00 is still too much, one very economical but also ergonomic option is using a stability ball as an office chair. Online retailers offer a huge range of stability balls in the range of $15. Sitting on a stability ball at the office can improve balance and strengthen back and core muscles. This might not be a great option in a very formal office setting, but in an office that is even moderately permissive a stability ball can be an inexpensive, but still comfortable solution to sitting at a desk for long periods of time. The only caveat is that stability balls do need to be re-filled from time to time. Some of the options available online come with a pump, and some do not, so it is a good idea to check and make sure that a ball comes with a pump for re-inflation before purchasing-- otherwise the effective cost will go up!
