When choosing furniture for their first house or condominium, many buyers dispense with their amalgamation of styles and designs that accompanied them through the first part of their life and relegate the still functional pieces to the new family room area. Creating a matching set of living room furniture that is comfortable, yet elegant and all underscores a theme or style, becomes a priority. Some purchasers choose to buy specific materials. Wood is a popular choice for sofa frames among those looking to create a more natural living space. Leather is a timeless investment as a sofa and chair covering and will last a few times longer than the average cloth sofa. When purchasing a leather sofa, the quality of the springs and the frame are important- as the rest of the sofa will last so long. Geographic themes that remain popular include Scandinavian design, both traditional and modern, and Rustic American or Mexican pieces that feature wood. Coffee tables and end tables remain necessary within a living room set and are usually chosen so that the materials match the seating materials and decor. Other traditional pieces of living room furniture include floor and table lamps to augment the lighting system that is in place in the house. Frequently, the brightness afforded by the extra lamps is welcomed during a party or other social occasion that merits it. If the home has a fireplace in the living room, a poker, broom, and shovel are normally purchased in a set as an accessory. If the home is not already carpeted, choosing an area rug becomes part of the decision-making that goes into room design. Choosing a Persian carpet can be a learning experience that is well worth the investment; especially when the design appeals to the buyers. When buying a fine carpet, be certain to check antique carpet options. Often, an antique carpet can be similarly priced today, when it was formally much more expensive. Similarly, although many young couples purchase their other living room furniture new, there are several other options available to them. Many consignment stores that carry furniture that is being sold by families that are in transition can be found in urban areas throughout North America. These are different from thrift stores in that the pieces sold there retain enough value for the seller that they wouldn't simply give the furniture away, but the stores still offer plenty of bargains. Leasing or renting furniture is another option for those who are unsure if they will want to make a long-term commitment to a particular style or time period.
