How To Pick Locks - The Most Common Techniques

Hobbies,Home Improvement,Recreation & Leisure
Don’t base lock picking with what you see in the movies. It’s more than just a couple of paperclips being used to open a doorknob. You have to know that there are a lot of available locks and they feature different mechanisms and components. This means that there should be different methods and techniques as well. As an enthusiast or budding locksmith, you have to know these different methods and techniques on how to pick locks. After all, you wouldn’t want to be caught with a lock that you couldn’t open.

Here are the 4 most common lock picking techniques:

1. Raking This is a technique that requires very little expertise and subtlety. You’re going to use a rake pick in order to rake through all the pins so that they’ll align with the shear line. Some locks require gentle raking while some require a more vigorous approach. Obviously, this method can easily be detected because there’s a possibility that the inside components would be damaged if done by unskilled individuals.

2. Picking This is the method that you can’t avoid because not all locks can be opened with raking alone. This technique requires a little more practice and knowledge of how locks work. Just like what the name implies, you would have to pick on the individual pins one by one until they all align with the shear line.

There are a lot of different picks that you can use so it’s a good idea to become proficient with them. You can start with the hook pick that’s perfect for pin-tumbler locks and the ball pick for wafer locks. It’s also a good idea to work on half-diamond picks because they offer versatility as it can also be used for raking.

3. Raking and picking All locksmiths are proficient with both techniques because they can be done to complement each other. You can rake through a few times and since the tension wrench will hold the picked pins in place, you just have to worry about the pins that weren’t aligned with the rake pick. So what are you going to do about them? You’re going to pick them one by one until they’re all aligned. This is a popular technique for beginners as it cuts down the picking time significantly.

4. Using a pick gun A lot of purists would scoff at the thought of using a pick gun. For them, picking locks is all about skills and using a pick gun defeats the purpose. But it’s worthy to note that using one can help you become very efficient. A lot of law enforcement officers have them especially those that do not know how to pick locks the traditional way.

A pick gun really looks like a gun in the sense that it also has a trigger. Pressing on the trigger makes the “pick” at the end of the gun snap up, taking the pins with it. You just need a little bit of practice so you can develop the timing necessary to effectively use the tool. This timing is needed to know when to rotate the tension wrench.

Mastering these 4 techniques is a must if you want to be proficient in the art of picking locks. With these 4, you can open the most common locks.
